Job Description
Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may take place face‑to‑face, remotely, or online. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

Adjunct faculty are paid a per credit hour rate determined by rank and discipline taught. Rank is established based on education and teaching experience. Faculty may teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and up to 8 credit hours during summer. Work schedule varies according to class appointments; telework options subject to change.

Duties and Tasks

Teach specific classes in the designated discipline.
Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of NOVA and the VCCS.
Maintain current competence in the discipline or area of specialization.

Essential Functions
The college expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly, submit required records and reports routinely, teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts, and uphold professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities (KSAs)

Adept knowledge of instructional technologies.
Excellent interpersonal and native or near‑native oral and written English skills.
Ability to work with a diverse student population.
Successful passing of a criminal background check.
Adjunct faculty are required to meet assigned classes on scheduled dates and submit grade records and reports.
Classes may be held during the day, evening, or a combination of both.
Excellent interpersonal and native or near‑native oral and written Spanish skills.

Required Qualifications

Applicant must hold a Master’s degree from an accredited university or college.
Applicant must have proven design experience outside academia and a diverse set of graphic design skills.
Advanced skills and understanding of the current version of Adobe Creative Cloud software is required.

Additional Considerations

Desired qualifications include college‑level teaching experience and/or relevant work experience and the ability to use instructional technologies.
Daytime, evening, and/or weekend availability.

Eligibility & Workplace Requirements
Must reside in the DC, VA, or MD DMV area.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned or to assist during emergency declarations by the Governor.
