This is an entry-level professional role that supports the 40-person department with a variety of graphic design tasks.The ideal candidate will have formal training or demonstrated experience in graphic or visual design. The designer will provide creative input, develop visual strategies, and support the production of materials such as presentations used in executive meetings and community engagement efforts.Examples of DutiesMAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESKey responsibilities will include the following:•Design visually compelling graphics, layouts, and templates for planning reports, presentations, public notices, and other outreach materials.•Develop and maintain consistent visual branding across all departmental communications, including print and digital formats.•Support social media efforts by creating engaging graphics, short video clips, and other visual content tailored to platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn.•Format and prepare planning documents and presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Adobe InDesign.•Edit and enhance photographs and images using Adobe Photoshop for use in public-facing materials.•Create clear and accessible infographics, charts, and diagrams to communicate planning data and concepts.•Collaborate with staff planners and architects to create accessible visuals for the public.•Assist with exporting and visually optimizing maps (produced in GIS) for inclusion in reports and presentations.•Ensure all materials meet accessibility best practices, including proper contrast and readability.•Manage and organize graphic assets and project files in a shared file environment (SharePoint).•Stay current on design trends, digital communication tools, and social media best practices relevant to public engagement and urban planning.•Provide graphic expertise to project teams within the planning department and cross-agency teams across city government•Manage and coordinate updates to the department website, including posting new content and ensuring visual consistency Minimum Qualifications Education For all entry-level Planners, it is a requirement to have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with major course of work in urban design, city planning, environmental planning, architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, graphic design or other related field of study.ExperienceFor entry into the Planner position, no work experience is required; however, the minimum education requirements must be met.
