Design Manager

Confidential Providence, Rhode Island

Position Overview: Work with Media Lab Director, Communications group, Events team, and other Lab stakeholders (e.g., faculty, Facilities group, Member Relations) to determine, define, and oversee design-related initiatives and materials that support the mission of the Lab, while maintaining the Lab’s visual standards and brand identity. Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**): • Work with Communications group to develop and maintain Lab’s branding and identity materials; • Work with Events team to conceptualize and develop visual identity and materials for major events; • With Communications group, develop and maintain internal and external communication materials (MLWeekly et al newsletters, All-Lab meetings, proposals (e.g. Thales, CEB)); • Collaborate with special projects teams on a variety of projects such as lobby exhibits; • Fullfill day-to-day Lab design needs (e.g. asset production and organization, collateral updates, business card orders); • Work with Communications group and ML videographer to develop and maintain illustration/animation style and standards; • Work with/advise MIT faculty and member companies on visual identity for special workshops and meetings; • Help decide when and how to partner with external resources (e.g. SYPartners on MLBook) and help develop/oversee the scope & design direction for these initiatives/projects; • Select and supervise outside vendors, including graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, and videographers as necessary; • Develop and manage budget for the Lab’s central design-related expenses; assist in developing budgets for the design portion of events, special projects; • Stay current with design & production technology and software; • Other duties as assigned. Supervision Received: Director of Communications Supervision Exercised: None Qualifications & Skills: MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor’s degree in a design required; • Minimum three years of experience working in a studio, consultancy, or in- house capacity; • Expert knowledge of graphic design software, photography, and video production/editing; • Excellent communication skills; • Ability to work independently with faculty, staff, students, sponsors, and third-party collaborators; • Ability to organize and see to completion complex projects, supervising the scheduling and delivery of all design-related initiatives; • Expertise in computer-based design and related media; need to stay current with constantly changing digital design, display, and printing technologies. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • Master's degree; • Minimum of five years professional design experience.
