Washington Sea Grant has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Graphic Designer to join our Communications Team. The designer will work on a professional communications team and in partnership with outreach staff across the organization to keep the public up to date on current ocean and coastal research, technology and practices and support the information needs of constituents across the state.The designer will help implement WSG’s visual brand identity across multiple media and is responsible for the visual and tangible execution of designs destined for print, the web, social media and more. WSG serves the state and the region by providing technical assistance to coastal users and managers, engaging the public in activities that promote ecosystem health, educating students of all ages, and encouraging science-based solutions to marine issues. As part of the WSG staff and through the position’s unique operational and coordination duties, the Graphic Designer has the potential to connect hundreds of Washington residents with UW centers, faculty, students and other university resources.Duties and ResponsibilitiesGraphic Design and Production (75%)Provide strategy, expertise, and guidance for design, illustration, and visual communications that align with equity, inclusion and accessibility best practices.Develop and provide original graphic design work, from conceptual to layout to printer-ready/web-ready art that complies with branding and accessibility requirements.Collaborate closely with team members to design and implement clear, compelling representations of complex information in multiple formats.Collaborate with Communications team members to deliver design components for projects, ensuring that projects stay on schedule and within budget.Coordinate the work of contract illustrators and designers as needed; select and manage print vendors; manage print processes internally and with external vendors including the delivery of products, ensuring all elements are completed on schedule and within budget.Stay current and employ the latest industry and design trends, and accessibility requirements, to continuously improve aesthetic and production processes.Visual Brand Development (10%)Work with the WSG Communications Team and WSG Leadership Team to solidify and extend WSG visual brand identity, maintaining consistency across WSG platforms while ensuring compliance with UW branding standards.Responsible for the overall design aesthetic and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure WSG brand message is at the forefront of all content and campaigns.Develop, maintain and implement comprehensive style guidelines.Other Duties as Assigned (15%)Contribute to the WSG Communications Team general activities that include things like: swag purchasing, deliveries and inventory support; ensuring production materials are getting to outreach staff; ensuring financial compliance for invoices and payments to vendors; and providing a helping hand when extra communications support is needed.Minimum RequirementsBachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Art, or a related field. Work activities may occur at WSG offices, meeting facilities, or offsite locations throughout Washington.The position may involve occasional local and regional travel.Periodic evening and weekend hours may also be necessary.Employees must have a reliable internet connection for remote work.
