Graphic Design And Communications Internship

Save The Bay Providence, Rhode Island

Save The Bay is seeking creative-minded interns to support the development and production of clear and engaging print and digital materials for marketing and communications outreach. This flexible internship is intended for students and graduates majoring in, or with significant coursework in, marketing, communications, public relations, writing/journalism, media, graphic design, or web design.

Location and time commitment

Work will primarily take place in person at the Bay Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Interns may also travel to the Aquarium in Newport or work aboard educational vessels. The internship runs approximately January through May for 10–15 hours per week, primarily on weekdays. One to two days on site between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Providence office is required. Occasional weekends are required for beach cleanups. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

The application deadline is December 3. Interviews and acceptances will be conducted on a rolling basis after this date, with priority given to applications received by the deadline. Decisions will be made by January 22. The intern reports to the Director of Marketing & Communications.

Responsibilities and learning opportunities

Update and produce graphic identity elements specific to the Save The Bay brand.
Design and/or update layouts for internal product design media.
Update media lists.
Represent Save The Bay at tabling events and other marketing events.
Assist with communications related to community outreach efforts and projects.
Help capture photographs and videos for Save The Bay.
Assemble press kits for news conferences.
Organize and update paper and electronic department files.
Participate in assigned graphic design projects and the layout of catalog pages, web pages, marketing graphics, and email graphics.
Write blogs or blog posts about Save The Bay programs, cleanups, or events.
Write captions for social media posts.
Help staff update the website to meet ADA standards and improve accessibility.

Qualifications

College student, recent graduate, graduate student, or beginning professional pursuing or holding a degree in a communications-related field.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva.
Knowledge of commonly used graphic design concepts, practices, and procedures.
Hard-working, self-motivated, proactive, and creative.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy environment.
Comfort speaking to groups and interacting with the general public on Save The Bay’s behalf.
Interest in, or willingness to learn, camera photography; no prior experience is required.
General office skills, including proficiency with G Suite and Microsoft Word.
Personal vehicle for transportation to off-site locations.

Additional details

This is an unpaid internship opportunity. Save The Bay will work with universities that offer college credit for unpaid internships. Many colleges offer stipends for students completing unpaid internships.
