Job DescriptionThe dual-hatted (cross-functional) graphic artist and front-end web developer will create original graphic artwork and web designs upon request. The role demands an understanding of graphic design practices, front-end website user interface (UI), and the ability to meet the unique needs of each funding unit while maintaining cohesive brand identity across UMKC's digital platforms. Additionally, the position will develop websites according to industry best practices and university standards. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Research and Institute Programs. Web and graphic design projects will align with and support the strategic objectives of the university.RolesGraphic Artist & Front-End UI DeveloperResponsibilitiesCreate compelling graphic designs for digital and print media, especially research proposals and presentations.Collaborate with internal researchers to develop and refine graphic designs, transforming sketches or concepts into final visuals through iterative processes.Develop visual concepts across multiple platforms based on researcher input, ensuring alignment with university branding and communication strategies.Design and develop user-friendly websites tailored to the needs of university units, incorporating researcher input and co-ideation.Ensure website accessibility compliance with ADA, Section 508, WCAG 2.1 levels A and AA, and the Americans with Communications Act (ACA).Coordinate with UMKC Information Services and the Division of Strategic Marketing and Communications for website domain management, approvals, and framework adherence.Maintain high standards of security, ensuring sensitive information is handled securely and in compliance with data protection protocols.Perform other related duties as assigned.DutiesCreate quick-turnaround graphic designs for digital and print media, focusing on research proposals and presentations.Produce wireframes, storyboards, infographics, and prototypes as needed.Design presentation templates, marketing posters, and graphics.Develop website UI designs, including iteration, launch, and updates, in line with UMKC branding standards and content approval processes.ExpectationsAssess and adapt to the needs of internal researchers to meet proposal or presentation deadlines.Balance time effectively across different units served.Meet project deliverables and deadlines as agreed.Use artificial intelligence tools judiciously in creating web pages, graphics, and videos, ensuring quality and adherence to standards.Follow best practices for image formatting, digital access, and archiving per UMKC standards.
