About the Role

An award-winning business news organization covering business, politics, and community affairs in central Indiana is hiring a news designer and graphic artist. The publication produces a weekly printed newspaper, daily digital content, 13 email newsletters, a legal supplement, and more than a dozen special publications annually.

The designer tells stories through information graphics, illustrations, and page layout while also exploring how AI can streamline production processes, strengthen data-driven graphics, and improve online presentation. The role joins a three-person design team where everyone contributes across illustration, layout, and production. The position reports to the lead designer.

What the Role Covers

Creating information graphics, charts, maps, timelines, and data visualizations for print and digitalDesigning news page layouts for the weekly newspaper and special publicationsDeveloping illustrations using drawing skills, digital techniques, stock art, and AI tools with appropriate disclosuresWorking with data and spreadsheets to find and present stories in numbersExploring and implementing AI tools to improve production workflows, data graphics, and online presentationPreparing photos for print and webMultitasking across projects, from timelines and bar charts to breaking-news locator maps for the webMeeting deadlines while maintaining creative quality

Qualifications

Understanding of visual journalism with experience creating information graphics and news layoutsThorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Illustrator, with Photoshop proficiency for photo preparationAbility to develop illustrations through drawing, digital manipulation, or a combination of techniquesExperience with AI beyond the basics; experience building or working with AI agents, or strong willingness and excitement to learnAbility to multitask and work quickly and accurately under deadline pressureSome journalism experience or education

Bonus skills include an instinct for finding news in numbers, experience with Excel or other spreadsheet programs, photo and video capabilities, and web design or coding skills.

The newsroom is located on Indianapolis's historic Monument Circle. The publication offers the chance to make a significant impact in a smaller newsroom covering a metro area of more than 2 million people.
