Tribal Communications and Publications Specialist

Necessary skills include writing, editing, designing, and producing documents for publication that represent the tone, quality, brand, and aesthetic of JSTs public image. Through our Resort Enterprises and Tribal Government, we are now the second largest employer in Clallam County and provide a wide range of employment opportunities to our Tribal Citizens and community. Essential Functions •Prepare and edit organizational publications for internal and external audiences, including Tribal Citizen and staff newsletters, press releases and editorial opinion pieces, Annual Report to Tribal Citizens and informational or promotional materials •Update, maintain, and monitor content posted on JST’s official social media •Duties may include writing articles, editing, proofreading, layout, design, production, bulk mailing and coordinating with appropriate staff concerning historical and political correctness in presentation of materials •May be authorized to independently produce special-edition books on Tribal history and governance as works-for-hire •Develop public relations strategies that promote Tribal initiatives, positions, and issues •Develop strategies to enhance JST’s public image. •Ensure messages are consistent with the overall brand to meet the Tribe’s standards and maintain and promote the positive image on behalf of JST •Act as liaison between JST and the media, including maintaining media contact lists and establishing relationships with members of the media; connecting media to appropriate Tribal staff members for interviews; working with the media to “pitch” stories and ensure accuracy of Tribal coverage; monitoring media coverage of JST and Tribal enterprises Implement, update, and assist staff and Directors with implementation of JST’s Communication Guidelines; promote Plain Language Standards in Tribal communications •Assist staff, directors, and Tribal Citizens with developing and adapting public presentation, papers, displays and reports; prepare and deliver presentations to further public relations objectives •Communicate messages to Tribal Citizens, the community, and potential partners and funding agencies •Assist emergency managers and public safety personnel with their communications needs during emergency situations •Develop and track JST’s editorial calendar •Write and produce grant proposals under the supervision of or in tandem with the Tribal Planner, Chief Operations Officer, or other directors and staff, as requested •Schedule, create the agenda, and carry out the recommendations of the Editorial Committee, which meets monthly in an advisory capacity for Tribal publications and other media projects •Work with other Tribal staff and Tribal Citizens on the House of Seven Generations Tribal archives to obtain, document and promote new historic photographs, documents, artifacts, and audio/video interviews •Maintain the organizational chart(s) and the Tribal newsletter mailing list •Coordinate with people and/or groups so that they work together effectively and efficiently •Adhere to all JST policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, and work practices as described in the Occupational Exposure Control Plan •Perform additional duties as assigned. A Bachelor’s degree in another field may be substituted when paired with previous professional experience in journalism, writing for publication, or other field of public communications •Experience writing in a variety of styles, for a variety of audiences (journalism, social media, technical, and grant writing) •Experience and proficiency in interviewing subjects for journalistic purposes and/or oral history, including concurrent transcription of oral interviews •Must demonstrate diligence and attention to detail, and an ability to create, fact- check, edit and proofread written material with a high level of accuracy •Experience in graphic design, knowledge of design principles, and knowledge of print layout •Must be proficient in use of desktop publishing, word processing and spreadsheet computer programs.
